President Donald Trump has threatened a 200% tariff on all alcoholic products shipped from the European Union, dismaying drinkers, restaurateurs, bar owners and suppliers across the US.

Across wine country in France, Italy and Spain one number is top of mind: 200%. That's because last week U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a tariff of that amount on European wine, Champagne and other spirits if the European Union went ahead with retaliatory tariffs on some U.

As one of the European Union's top negotiators, Sabine Weyand has battled Britain over Brexit and driven tough trade talks around the world. But as Europe seeks a deal to avert further U.S. tariffs, the EU's most senior civil servant for trade acknowledges one fundamental obstacle: Donald Trump's endgame remains a mystery.

In his first term, Trump also targeted the alcohol industry. A series of tit-for-tat tariffs hit alcohol products in the U.S. and the EU.
