California Gov. Gavin Newsom, one of President-elect Donald Trump's top political adversaries, has shifted his focus in recent days from gearing up for legal battles against the incoming Republican administration to prioritizing the state’s response to destructive wildfires around Los Angeles.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday expanded a special session for California lawmakers to respond to deadly wildfires tearing through Los Angeles County and asked the legislature to approve $2.5 billion to aid response and recovery efforts.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is proposing a $2.5 billion wildfire response and recovery package in the ongoing special session of the Legislature dedicated to “Trump-proofing” California. Newsom and state legislative leaders have agreed to set aside $50 million to defend California from the incoming Donald Trump administration,

The move by Governor Gavin Newsom came after several days of calls by Republican lawmakers for a special session to address the Los Angeles-area blazes.

The south state Republican sent a letter asking the governor to convene a special session in response to “California’s ongoing wildfire crisis.”

Republicans called for the session to be shut down “immediately" and accused Newsom of cutting wildfire prevention funding by 80% over the last four years.

Gavin Newsom, who called the special session and earlier this week unveiled the fire aid. It also spares Republicans from a difficult vote after they railed against Democrats for possibly forcing them to choose between helping Southern Californians recover and rejecting funding to sue the incoming Trump administration.

Gov. Gavin Newsom promised that his fire aid proposal will not be conditioned on his "Trump-proof" bill after Republican state lawmakers said they didn't want to be in the position of having to choose.
