The WRAL Severe Weather Center is tracking what could be a significant winter storm for the coming weekend, Jan. 24-25, 2026.

Meteorologists are watching whether a major winter storm will hit Albany this weekend. But with temperatures below zero, they advise bundling up either way.

Winds will veer out of the west-northwest after 6 p.m. and gust 20 to 30 mph during the late evening and overnight hours. This means wind-chills of 30° around 4 p.m. will quickly plummet into the mid-teens by midnight. Tuesday will be brutally cold all day with morning wake-up wind-chills around 0° to 5°.

For the fourth day in a row, the long-range computer weather models are hinting at a Winter Storm hitting Texas this weekend.

After a chilly Tuesday, southwest winds will warm temperatures into the 40s on Wednesday and into the 50s on Thursday. Another blast of colder air will begin to move in late Friday, triggering a few rain showers on Friday before temperatures turn significantly colder on Saturday.

Here's the general thinking as of Tuesday morning. Our northern and northwestern counties should see a faster changeover from freezing rain to mostly sleet and snow, whereas the I20 corridor will see more freezing rain and sleeting before a changeover. Our southern counties are at the greatest risk of seeing ice accumulations.
