India has proposed to levy import duties on some products made in the United States to counter Washington's tariffs on steel and aluminium products produced in Asia's No.3 economy, a notice to the World Trade Organization (WTO) shows.

India had sought consultations with the US under the WTO's safeguard agreement, following American authorities' decision to impose these tariffs.

India has formally signaled its intention to levy retaliatory duties on a range of American goods, a direct response to the United States' ongoing and recently revised tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
