An earthquake rattled the Bay Area early Thursday — with shaking felt in San Jose, miles from the epicenter. The 3.1-magnitude temblor was centered near the Ohlone Regional Wilderness, about 19 miles northeast of San Jose, according to the US Geological Survey.
Many of the state’s largest earthquakes have struck near the junction, where the Pacific, North American and Gorda plates meet. This area also forms the boundary between two infamous threats: the San Andreas Fault system, which runs across most of California, and the Cascadia subduction zone, which goes up to Vancouver Island, Canada.

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck in the Bay Area on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake hit at 8:14 a.m. about 2 miles east-southeast of San Ramon. It had a depth of 5.1 miles. Magnitude 2.8 and 2.6 quakes followed minutes later. Weak shaking was reported in parts of the East Bay Area.
