The Boston City Council saw a 5% pay hike this month that boosted salaries to $120,000 for the 13 councilors, half of whom skipped out on a state ethics training session held Friday amid the feds’ pursuit of a corruption case against one councilor.

The Boston City Council is proposing a tax on sugary drinks, saying the money on unhealthy beverages can be put to good use.

Some Boston city councilors are pushing for a new city tax on soda and other sugary beverages that have been linked to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. City Councilor Sharon Durkan said this week that raising the price on sugary drinks would help reduce consumption — while also generating millions in new revenue to support city programs.
