The law is the last of 13 pieces of legislation at the center of a political saga at the state Capitol over how the state should address organized property crimes.

On Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill increasing penalties for large-scale felony thefts. Assembly Bill 1960 requires courts to impose longer sentences for people convicted of taking, damaging, or destroying high-value property.

California’s Democratic leaders say it’s meant to target organized criminals who raid retail and designer stores.

Democratic supporters of the bill package have said it will amend existing law while keeping criminal justice reforms in place.
