Scientists have found cocaine in the muscle tissue of sharks off the coast of Brazil in a study that shows marine animals are ingesting illicit drugs that end up in the ocean.
All 13 sharks examined were found to have unfiltered cocaine in much higher concentrations than in previous studies on other animals, indicating chronic exposure to the drug.
The researchers found concentrations of cocaine up to 100 times higher than previously detected in other marine animals in tests on the muscles and livers of the sharks.
