NEW YORK — Dabney Coleman, the mustachioed character actor who specialized in smarmy villains like the chauvinist boss in “9 to 5” and the nasty TV director in “Tootsie,” has died.

Dabney Wharton Coleman was born in Austin on Jan. 3, 1932. He was the youngest of four children and was 4 when his father, a businessman and cotton farmer, died of pneumonia at 39 amid the Depression.
