Eighteen southern Iowa counties are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Main threats include large hail, along with heavy rain and scattered wind gusts up to 70 mph.

Hail poses the biggest threat. Some stronger wind gusts within thunderstorms can be expected as well, with consistent gusts 30+ mph throughout the day. The storms will likely impact the western portions of Local 5's viewing area in the late afternoon, before heading into the Des Moines metro between 6-8 p.m.
