RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- This week, state lawmakers are expected to resume debate on SB 382 -- the controversial bill that ties hundreds of millions of dollars in new disaster relief funding for Hurricane Helene to sweeping changes in state law.

As those in Western North Carolina continue asking for help in the wake of destruction from Helene, state legislators remain divided on next steps.

On Tuesday, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper vetoed a Republican-backed relief package that would strip power away from his successor, Governor-elect Josh Stein, and other Democrats who won their elections earlier this month. State Republicans are pushing to pass Senate Bill 382 before losing their supermajority next year.

Senate Bill 382 located an additional $252 million for Hurricane Helene relief, adding to the over $900 million that lawmakers had already set aside or started spending.
