In 2023, consumption of eggs in the United States was estimated at 281.3 per person. Undoubtedly a staple in the American diet, concerns have been raised over the safety of egg production following a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recall of eggs linked to a salmonella outbreak in several Midwest states.

The recall was originally announced Sept. 6 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was upgraded Sept. 30 to Class I.

Eggs recalled over salmonella concerns have been upgraded to the highest possible risk by the FDA. The recall was first announced in early September, involving eggs labeled with "Milo’s Poultry Farms" and "Tony’s Fresh Market" brands.

Iowa is one of nine states to report cases of salmonella after the Food and Drug Administration announced the egg recall in early September.

The FDA announced that the recall of "Milo’s Poultry Farms" and "Tony’s Fresh Market" has been upgraded to Class I, meaning the eggs may cause serious health issues or death.
