Crews continued working to contain a fire that has blackened more than 1.5 square miles of rugged open terrain this week near El Monte County Park and had the task 35% complete Friday.

The fire was reported Tuesday afternoon, June 17, near El Monte Rd in Lakeside in East San Diego County and quickly led to evacuations for nearby residents.

Cal Fire Captain Robert Johnson said about 10 structures were threatened, but none had suffered any damage as of late Tuesday night. Evacuation orders are still in place.
