AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas lawmakers advanced a bill Wednesday to clarify medical exceptions under one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the U.S., putting the GOP-backed proposal on the brink of reaching Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk.

Doctors would not need to wait until a risk to their pregnant patient’s life is “imminent” or until the patient is physically impaired, according to the bill.

The bill does not expand abortion access, but further explains when a doctor can intervene to save a pregnant patient’s life.
