Southern California beachgoers could be in for a rough ride as strengthening Tropical Storm Elida churns toward hurricane status, whipping up powerful ocean swells expected to slam the region’s coastline.

Tropical Storm Elida formed early Wednesday in the Eastern Pacific, roughly 560 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, as a strengthening El Niño fuels an active start to the basin's hurricane season.

Tropical Storm Elida is expected to bring muggy, warm weather to the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sacramento Valley and California coastline.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical waves that could develop in the Atlantic, forecasting slightly lower chances for one of those disturbances. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed Wednesday before noon. The storm is in the north central Atlantic Ocean. It is located about 680 miles west of The Azores. It is moving quickly to the east at 16mph. Max winds are around 40mph.

Experts are monitoring potential tropical development in the Gulf of America, though no immediate threat exists.
