Carex appalachica features graceful and striking fine, dark green, 12" long weeping blades, which lie in a in a sweeping mound six inches from the ground. When planted in masses, the foliage appears to curve and swirl in a stunning look of motion - wind causes the foliage to moves in sweeping motions. The fine-textured long blades of this grass look so soft and inviting, youll want to lie down in it. Its fountaining habit makes it a lovely and outstanding groundcover in dry shady sites, even in the root zone under trees . When used singly or en masse, the textural contrast near bolder elements is simply stunning. Use Appalachian Sedge for ground cover, mass plantings, naturalizing, soil stabilization, erosion control on slopes , borders , a lawn alternative in dry shade, and woodland areas. This sedge is a great choice for "no-mow" sitautions (although it can be mowed on a high setting). Excellent for natural habitats (especially under trees ), it is a fairly rare native of the Eastern US. Its tidy clumping nature makes it perfectly suited for containers, in rock gardens or stumps, or in a border planting along a walkway. Appalachian Sedge makes a lovely low-maintenance lawn substitute (will not tolerate foot traffic) as it will grow under many conditions, as long as it is in dry to average soil. It is easy to grow and quite drought tolerant , it will tolerate drying out with regular watering; it will not tolerate consistently wet soil. Appalachian Sedge prefers some shade, particularly in warmer climates (where it is evergreen ). White inflorescences in late spring are followed by seed heads. Mature height 6-8", spread 12-18".
