A treat indoors or out, this exquisite eucalyptus (familiarly known as silver dollar plant) is a study in color, fragrance, and texture. The round, very flat silvery blue leaves are held in pairs along stiff stems of the same color, giving the plant a very neat, layered look. Wonderfully scented, they last a long time. These boughs are fabulous as everlastings for indoor arrangements. A native of Australia, silver dollar plant is at home in warm climates or indoors and can be pruned to desired height. Expect it to put on as much as 8 feet of height in a single season. And in the sunny garden, it grows rapidly but is not invasive. It will eventually reach 30 feet or more high, with a tall, slender silhouette that fits well in today's smaller gardens. To dry, simply cut the stem at the desired height and hang it upside-down in a well-ventilated, dry, somewhat cool location. The 3- to 4-inch leaves, each pierced by the central stem, are magnificent over a long time, and unlike anything else in the garden or home. Very long lived, this eucalyptus asks only for good potting soil refreshed annually and adequate water. The seed germinates in light, so lay it on top of the sponge in your Bio-Dome or atop the soil in a seed flat. You will love watching this tree take shape before your eyes.
