Days to maturity: 60 to 70 A hybrid mid maturity tomatillo variety, Super Verde is a fruit vegetable. The plant sets firm fruit with a deep oblate shape; an attractive green color; strong, healthy husks; and an above average shelf life. Tomatillos are a staple in salsa verde, but they can also be roasted, grilled, or sauteed. Typically grown as an annual, Super Verde Hybrid Tomatillo, an herbaceous tender perennial, is a member of the night shade or solanaceous plant family, which includes plants that naturally grow in temperate to tropical regions. Super Verde has improved uniformity and yield potential. An indeterminate variety, it has a medium-tall, vigorous habit and may require staking or caging for support. Growing on a trellis improves fruit quality and makes harvesting easier. The fruit is usually harvested when its husk bursts open but fruit is still green. Super Verde Hybrid Tomatillo is naturally disease resistant, easy to grow, and very productive. Tomatillo prefers full sun and well-drained loam amended with a balanced ratio of nutrients, preferably a 10:10:10. It loves long, hot summers, growing best when temperatures range from 77 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit. A warm-season vegetable, sensitive to cold temperatures and frost, tomatillo seed can be direct sown into warm spring soil after all danger of frost has passed, but it can also be started indoors approximately 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date and transplanted. Flowers begin to set fruit with night temperatures between 55 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Protect plants with row covers if temperatures are expected to dip below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Mulching helps to moderate soil temperature, maintain soil moisture, and control weeds. If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant. Tomatillo requires cross-pollination to bear fruit. Cross-pollination is the transfer of pollen, typically by honeybees, from one variety to a different variety within a plant species. Be sure to place plants within 100 feet of each other. A greater distance between them may result in poor pollination. Keep in mind that most pesticides are toxic to bees and should not be used during bloom time. Bees are most active when the temperature is above 65 degrees Fahrenheit and winds are below 10 miles an hour.
